The University has the responsibility of generating and refining technologies for farmers and developing  technology transfer models for use of the departments associated with developmental activities for the benefit of the farming community of the state.

 

 

 

 

 

The University has a separate Directorate of Extension Education which refines technologies and disseminates knowledge to farming community through a network of KVKs in various    agro-climatic zones. It also provides feed back to the research system for finding solution to the farmer's problems. It operates in the principle of teaching by doing and learning by doing and enables farmers to acquire up-to-date skills to boost up production in farming sector. Transfer of knowledge programmes are carried out through Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVK),  University Extension Block Programme (UEBP), Information and Communication wing, Distance Education, Video Project, Agricultural Technology Information Centre (ATIC), Kissan Call Centre (KCC) and Orissa Gender Resources Centre (OGRC).

 

 

 

Krishi Vigyan Kendra  (KVK)

  Krishi Vigyan Kendra (Farm Science Centre) is a district level innovative institution mainly concerned with Transfer of Technological knowledge through On-Farm Testing (OFT), Front Line Demonstration (FLD), training and Farm Advisory Services at grass root level. Presently, 27 KVKs are operating under the University in 27 districts and a new KVK for Bolangir district is being sanctioned by the ICAR to operate under the Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology.  Two KVKs for Khurda and Cuttack districts are operating under ICAR Institutes such as CIFA & CRRI respectively.

Transfer of Technological knowledge  programmes include capacity building (vocational training of farmers,. farm women, training for rural youth, training of extension functionaries and sponsored training), conduct of Front Line Demonstration (FLD), On-farm testing, Production and distribution of quality seeds and planting materials (utilizing Revolving Fund), Publication of literatures for farmers and other extension activities (Farmers fair, Exhibition, Field day, Farmer-Scientist interaction, celebration of special days, Radio and TV programme).

 

 

University Extension Block Programme 

 

The University Extension Block Programme (UEBP) has the prime function of transferring innovative technological knowledge  regarding Crop production, Horticulture, Soil Science, Veterinary Science to the farmers. At present it is operating in two districts namely, Khurda and Puri wih 450 selected a families spread over four villages. Activities include organizing crop demonstrations, field days, farmer-scientist interactions, exhibitions and conducting village level training programmes. The rural Agricultural work Experience/Field training programmes for B.Sc. (Ag.), B. Sc. (Forestry) and B.Sc. (Home Science) are conducted in these villages.

 

 Information and Communication

 

The major functions of the Information and Communication wing are production of farm literature and popularizing innovations through All India Radio, Door Darshan and Newspapers etc. The following publications are brought out regularly.

A bi-monthly publication in Oriya for progressive farmers and extension workers.

A monthly publication in Oriya, highlighting strategies for neo literate farmers.

Distance Education Programme

 

Distance Education Programme provides agricultural education to the literate farmers, farm women, school dropouts and unemployed youth for empowering them so as to go for self-employment. So far 13527 farmers have been enrolled in ten different courses such as paddy cultivation, vegetable cultivation, fruits cultivation, betelvine cultivation, groundnut cultivation, pisciculture, dairy farming, honey bee keeping, poultry rearing and mushroom cultivation. Latest technologies and skills are communicated to them through postal correspondence. There are about 721 certificate holders through distance education. They have assumed the role of key communicators on agricultural innovations  in the villages. Twenty-one rural drop-outs and neo-literates have been self-employed through distance education and they have been able to get loan from the banks, using the certificates issued to them. 

 

Video Project 

 

Video is a powerful tool for successful dissemination of farm technology to the rural community. So far 83 need based programmes on agriculture and allied subjects have been produced and distributed to KVKs of Koraput, Keonjhar, Bargarh and Kandhamal districts and to some NGOs for educating the farmers. Eleven programmes have already been transferred to CD format for the benefit of all KVKs. More than 909, farmers, farm women and rural youth have been exposed to this media. The feedbacks collected form these centers are considered for further refinement of production programmes to cater to the present needs of the farmers.

 

 

Agricultural Technology Information Center (ATIC)

 

 

ATIC has been created for single door delivery of inputs, services, technology and information. Kissan Call Centre and Touch Screen Facility for farmers/visitors have been added. It is located in the Campus of Directorate of Extension Education A group of multi-disciplinary team of scientists are associated  with the project.  A Kissan Call Centre operates in the ATIC Centre to meet the direct querries of farmers. A team of Scientists answer the calls.

 

 

 

Orissa Gender Resource Centre

 

The Orissa Gender Resource Centre was established  in  2006 and is  functioning in the Directorate of Extension Education. The  Centre takes up women empowerment programmes. The Centre has conducted workshop on "Gender in development", training on "Gender Sensititzation in Agriculture and has done pilot testing of "Gender Sensitization Training Module" for extension functionaries.
